Xiang Cheng, Volume 21: Formulas and Many Wondrous Incenses I

A volume-by-volume interpretation of Zhou Jiazhou's Xiang Cheng, Volume 21, "Formulas and Many Wondrous Incenses I."

Volume 21 · Formulas and Many Wondrous Incenses I

Main body of incense formulas: records various formulas for seal incense, burning incense, and fumigating incense (such as Dingzhou Official Treasury Seal Incense and Xuanhe Imperial Made Incense), detailing the roles of sovereign, minister, assistant, and envoy and the methods of compounding.

Its Place in Xiang Cheng

The twenty-eight volumes of Xiang Cheng are divided into six major sections: appraisal of incense materials (volumes 1–5), religious and court use of incense (volumes 6–7), incense anecdotes and allusions (volumes 8–16), incense literature and poetry (volumes 17–20), incense formulas (volumes 21–25), and literati pure offerings and blended floral incenses (volumes 26–28). This volume is one link in that chain, connecting the complete genealogy of incense culture(香学) from "documents—anecdotes—formulas."
