Etiquette of using incense for ancestor worship during Qingming Festival

The core rules for using incense in Qingming ancestor worship are as follows: offer three sticks of incense (some local customs have one main stick and three accompanying sticks); after lighting, do not blow with the mouth—fan out with the hand or let it extinguish naturally; insert incense vertically with spacing not exceeding one inch; do not arbitrarily pull out and reinsert during burning. For incense materials, choose those with proper fragrance and non-irritating smoke—agarwood, sandalwood, and cypress incense are suitable; avoid cheap incense with chemical fragrances. These details may seem meticulous, but behind them is an old principle: 'Reach sincerity through incense, put reverence first.'

1. Why Qingming is a festival of 'incense'

Qingming itself is a combination of two festivals: the solar term Qingming and the ancient Cold Food Festival and Shangsi Festival. During Cold Food, fire was prohibited; on Qingming day in the Tang Dynasty, new fire was distributed from the palace. Han Hong's line 'At dusk, the Han palace distributes candles, light smoke disperses into the houses of the five marquises' describes this. After the fire prohibition, rekindling fire—the imagery of fire and smoke—is especially significant at the Qingming node.

For ancestral worship, incense is essential. The Analects (Xue Er) says, 'Carefully attend to the end and pursue the distant, and the virtue of the people will return to thickness.' This speaks of the effect of funeral and sacrificial rites on social customs; at a family's grave, it is this action—light a stick of incense and tell the ancestors we have come. The smoke rising upward is understood as 'the message has been delivered.'

Therefore, using incense during Qingming is essentially not 'just lighting a scent' but a communication ritual. Understanding this makes many rules seem less cumbersome: insert incense straight because bending is a posture; insert incense firmly because shaking is the heart; do not rummage in the incense burner because that is someone else's family letter.

2. Specific steps and etiquettes for offering incense in cemeteries

Customs vary greatly by region. The following is the most commonly practiced method and the version most frequently heard by the shopkeeper from customers over the years.

  1. First tidy the ground, then arrange offerings.Clear weeds around the grave, arrange offerings (fruit, pastries, wine, rice—varies by region), pour wine three rounds, then offer incense. Some places emphasize 'first arrange, then bow, then burn paper money'; the order cannot be mixed up.
  2. Offer three sticks of incense.Three is the most common number, with meanings varying by region: heaven, earth, and humanity; the three powers; fortune, prosperity, and longevity; or 'respect heaven, respect earth, respect ancestors.' A few places use one main stick with three accompanying sticks, or four sticks (adding one for the local earth god).
  3. Do not blow out incense with an open flame. If there is a flame after lighting, fan it out with the hand or gently shake it out; do not blow with the mouth—this is the most widely spread taboo, based on the reason that breath is unclean.
  4. Insert incense vertically with spacing not exceeding one inch.Hold incense with both hands up to the brow, silently recite the object of respect, then insert into the incense burner. The three sticks should be of equal height and straight; do not move them after insertion.
  5. Wait until the incense has burned one-third before burning paper money. Many people burn paper money immediately upon arrival, but the old etiquette is to let the incense go first and paper money follow.
  6. Confirm the fire is out before leaving. This is the most important point nowadays. Cemetery vegetation is dry, and incense embers can smolder for a long time. Before leaving, pour water or cover with soil to confirm there is no smoke.

Some places say "don't leave until the incense has finished burning," while others say "burning halfway is enough." These are regional customs; simply follow the practice of the local elders, and there is no need to insist on uniformity.

III. What incense to use for ancestor worship: selection of incense materials

Three practical criteria for choosing incense:

Price note: the ranges above reflect public market prices, subject to market fluctuations, for reference only. For agarwood incense sticks used in ancestral rites, you can buy properly scented ones for around one hundred yuan, and there is no need to pursue high-priced varieties—incense for Qingming lies in respect, not in price. If you really want to use something better, keep a small box of Hui'an-system agarwood for use before the family shrine or memorial tablet, and use sandalwood or cypress incense at the cemetery; this is the practice of many longtime customers.

IV. New rules in recent years: safety and compliance

Using incense at Qingming now comes with two hard constraints.

The first is fire prevention.Every year around Qingming, there are no small number of wildfires in various places caused by fire use during tomb sweeping, and many cemeteries have explicitly restricted open flames, switching to centralized burning points or "flowers for paper money." Before going up the mountain, ask clearly about the cemetery's rules, so you don't bring large bundles of incense and paper and get stopped at the gate. If you really must use fire, choose a windless day, stay away from dry grass, and thoroughly extinguish it before leaving.

The second is the source of incense material.Wild populations of agarwood are listed in CITES Appendix II, and import and export require permits. When buying agarwood ritual items, especially those labeled "wild old material," ask about the source and compliance documentation; legitimate channels can answer. If you have questions when choosing, you can also bring the actual item to the store, and we providefree appraisal。

The day before Qingming last year, a longtime customer called to ask: could the half box of old agarwood left by his father be taken to burn before the grave? The shopkeeper's answer was—You can burn it, but there is no need to burn it. Keep the old material and enjoy a small piece at home over indirect heat in daily life; that will last longer than burning it all at once. If you really want to express something before the grave, use newly purchased sandalwood or cypress incense; the sentiment is the same. He later did so and said the box of old incense now sits in his study, and it instead often reminds him of his father.

Frequently asked questions

How many sticks of incense are most appropriate for Qingming?

Three sticks is the most common number, symbolizing heaven, earth, and humanity or fortune, prosperity, and longevity, and it is common across north and south. In some regions there are customs of one main stick plus three, or adding one stick to honor the local earth deity; these are regional differences, so follow the local elders. The key points arelight them all at once, insert them straight at equal height, and do not move them after inserting, and do not pull them out and reinsert them midway.

Is agarwood or sandalwood better for ancestor worship?

It depends on the setting. In family shrines, before ancestral tablets, with few people and close range, agarwood is best—its qi is clear, smoke is fine, and it doesn't choke, suitable for silent rituals; in outdoor cemeteries with wind and many people, sandalwood or cypress incense is more practical, with good diffusion and low cost, and can be smelled even in the wind. The same principle applies to budget: for daily rituals, agarwood incense sticks in the hundred-yuan range are already proper; there's no need to chase high prices.

When incense is lit and there's an open flame, can you blow it out?

According to old etiquette, you shouldn't blow it out, because breath is considered unclean. The correct way is to fan it out with your hand, gently shake it out, or simply let the flame burn out naturally (good incense will extinguish on its own). When inserting incense, hold it with both hands up to your brow, silently recite, then insert it in one go; once steady, release without adjusting.
