Agarwood for beginners

A low-risk path from curious to confident.

Updated 2026-10-07 · Wubaiyi Agarwood (伍佰艺沉香), Hainan plantations & Beijing flagship store

1. Start with one lot, not a collection

The fastest way to learn agarwood is to live with one honest lot. Buy a single bracelet or one chip set, use it, compare notes, then expand. A shelf of average pieces teaches less than one good piece you actually know.

2. Pick the use first

3. Grade for beginners

You do not need sinking grade to enjoy agarwood. Non-sinking and semi-sinking material gives most of the aromatic experience at a fraction of the price. Save sinking and qinan for when you know what you are paying for.

4. Ask for facts, not adjectives

Request the gram weight, bead count and diameter, and a photo of the oil lines of the actual lot. A seller who gives these in writing is one you can verify against the delivered piece.

5. Red flags

6. Our starter path

Tell us how you plan to use the piece and your budget band. We suggest a grade, state it in writing, photograph the oil lines, and ship a sample so the decision is made in your hand — not from a product photo.

Frequently asked questions

What agarwood should a beginner buy first?

One honest lot matched to your use: a non-sinking or semi-sinking bracelet for wearing, or a small chip set for heating. Learn one piece before building a collection.

Do I need sinking-grade agarwood as a beginner?

No. Non-sinking and semi-sinking grades give most of the aroma at much lower cost; sinking and qinan are for collectors who know the difference.

How do I avoid buying fake agarwood?

Ask for gram weight, bead count and an oil-line photo of the actual lot, order a sample first, and beware bargain prices on 'qinan' or 'sinking' grades.
